Grand Rapids Christian Schools
Freelance work I did for Grand Rapids Christian Schools included school-wide e-newsletters.
“At the heart of intercultural learning is learning how to hear…Loving the stranger is not about putting up with the inferior ways of others; it involves realizing that I am a stranger too.”
(D. Smith, Learning from the Stranger, 120-121)
Grand Rapids Christian Schools is exploring the possibility of implementing a Spanish language immersion program in the 2010-2011 school year at the soon-to-open Grand Rapids Christian Elementary School. Commitment to diversity is a signet of Grand Rapids Christian Schools, and the FLES program is a good fit as well as an attractive programming option to what is already being deemed a best-in-class PreK – fifth grade elementary school.
On January 7, 2010 families of Grand Rapids Christian Schools and all other interested families are invited to investigate Spanish language immersion programming at Grand Rapids Christian Schools. School administrators, area world language teachers, and local language immersion experts with ten-plus years of experience in their field will present on the structure, scope and benefits of Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES) programming.
In an immersion program students learn their core curriculum in the non-English (i.e. Spanish, Chinese) language. They study the same content as their peers in the non-immersion program but are "immersed" in the target language learning to read, speak, and write naturally and gradually in that target language.
Research has proven that students with a high level of proficiency in a second language have:
“…demonstrated higher reading level in their first language.” (D’ Anguilli, Siegel & Sierra, Applied Psycholinguistics)
“…advanced in the job market, enjoyed traveling, felt less isolated, been able to work in international markets…” (Weatherford, ERIC Digest)
You can learn more about Foreign Language in Elementary School programming by accessing the Grand Rapids Christian Schools website at this link:

Grand Rapids Christian Schools
Eagle Vision Quarterly Magazine was a "state of the schools" update sent to the families of enrollees, staff, all alumni and donors.
Grand Rapids Christian High School students know they face high expectations. And this year, like every other, they rose to the challenge with amazing academic accomplishments.
Their accolades tell a story of high standards and hard work.
Of the Class of 2009, 97% will attend colleges and universities in the fall—83% at four-year institutions and 14% at two-year schools.
"This statistic is among the highest in West Michigan and the state of Michigan," said Superintendent Thomas J. DeJonge. "I believe it reflects our enduring commitment to academic excellence and the love of learning we are instilling in our students."
Here are some more of the accomplishments of Christian High students:
-
Nearly $1 million in college academic scholarships was awarded to more than 200 graduating seniors.
-
81% of graduating seniors earned the Michigan Promise Grant.
-
90% met or surpassed the state standards in math, reading, science and writing as measured by the Michigan Merit Exam in 2009.
-
The Class of 2008 average ACT composite score was 23.8, as compared to the state average of 18.8. (Results for the Class of 2009 are not yet available.)
Christian High also continued its long tradition of producing National Merit Scholar finalists. This year’s finalists were Geneva Langeland, Anna Plantinga and Rachel Tasker. Four students were awarded commended status: Alaynah Boyd, Joshua Garvelink, Kevin Peterson and James Randall.
In the last five years, Christian High has produced 21 finalists and 20 commended students from the National Merit Program.
"Our students’ achievements rival and surpass the finest private and public schools within our community," DeJonge said. "We’re very proud of our students and grateful to their parents and teachers who nurture an environment that encourages intellectual, physical and spiritual growth."

Battle Creek Health System
Some of the work I did for Battle Creek Health System included corporate newsletters. Certain information in the pieces was implied because they were in-house publications.
MSW.....More Than Meets the Eye
Battle Creek Health System is continually striving for total quality in the care we give our patients. The stages of that continuum of care range from pre-admission testing to discharge planning, with many disciplines in between. One of the disciplines, which is invaluable from the beginning of an individual's care with BCHS to the end, is Medical Social Work.
Commonly known for it's responsibility for all traditional discharge planning, Medical Social Work (MSW) also has a comprehensive role in determining the course of an individual's health care during the midst of his or her stay with BCHS. Some of the vital, but perhaps less apparent, services also provided by MSW include patient assessment, participation in care-team meetings, offering individual and group psychosocial services, and removing obstacles to decision making through crisis intervention, counseling, advocating, and coordinating community services. It is a chief goal of MSW to promote patient autonomy, self-direction, and dignity. These services are offered not only at the inpatient Community site, but also in outpatient settings at the Leila site and in Hemodialysis.
MSW is an integral part of BCHS because of the supportive role they play in our facility as well as in the community. A portion of community organizations that value the input of MSW at BCHS include: Borgess Interactive Project - Maternal/Child (a collaboration of Battle Creek agencies offering services to new mothers); Continuum of Care Committee (a committee comprised of community healthcare specialists contributing support and knowledge to area nursing homes); and the Calhoun County Social Work Group (a new group in which Social Workers gather to network and continue their education on services available to patients). It is through community interaction that MSW stays abreast of their ever-changing, ever-increasing importance in healthcare facilities. Community involvement is also one means through which BCHS is able to continue having a profound impact on the well-being of our region.
The 24-hour MSW team is comprised of individuals possessing Bachelors and Masters degrees in Social Work (BSW and MSW); some who have become Registered Social Workers (RSW) upon obtaining their Bachelors degree, and some who have become members of the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW) upon obtaining their Masters degree and after working in the Social Work field for a required amount of time. So what exactly is the significance of all this education and this array of initials? The significance is a guarantee of dedication, determination, empathy, and professionalism, which is exactly what, in addition to numerous inter-disciplinary functions, the professionals in the BCHS Medical Social Work department have to offer our clients.
If you have a loved one expecting to be a patient at BCHS, and you or they wish to have access to the services available through MSW, you may contact the Social Worker on the appropriate unit to arrange a consultation from MSW. If you are simply interested in the MSW department, and would like to know more, please contact Paul Zang, ACSW, Director of Medical Social Work at BCHS.

Sunshine Community Church
A simple article written for the Sunshine Community Church (Grand Rapids MI) newsletter.
Sunshine Women's Retreat
Ladies, a prime opportunity to advance God's Kingdom is before us! The much-anticipated Sunshine Women’s Retreat will be held on November 3-5, 2006 at Yarrow Golf & Conference Center in Augusta.
Yarrow is a beautiful retreat center, with peaceful grounds and a cozy atmosphere making it very conducive to times of intimacy with the Lord. The tranquil setting promises to enhance the restorative offerings of the retreat.
The weekend will entertain a diverse agenda. Ladies can look forward to relationship-building activities, inspiring speakers, valuable personal time, and plenty of ‘girl food'. Provided meals include Friday night appetizers and Saturday breakfast/lunch/dinner. A Sunday breakfast followed by a morning worship service and lunch will cap off the two-day sojourn.
The retreat is currently $149 per person, which includes the ministerial activities, all meals and two nights’ lodging in a double room for four ladies. Fundraisers are being planned to help defray costs and there is the potential for scholarship availability. Some individuals might feel called to sponsor one or more women. If so, any checks should be made payable to Sunshine and mailed to the attention of Sally Bolthouse. All checks should have “Women’s Retreat” noted on the memo line.
Many women would likely love to be invited to a weekend of being revived by the Lord. Maybe you know someone who needs to experience His touch in a fresh way, or perhaps, for the first time ever. While space for women to attend is ample, reservations are expected to come in quickly once they are being taken. More information about reserving your space will follow at a later date. Questions about the retreat should be directed to Barb Ruiter at 1234@5678.net or 123-4567.
Any person interested in helping with the retreat in some way should call Barb at the number above, or Sally Bolthouse at 123-4567 ext. 123. Help as well as prayers are coveted treasures! Are you being called to step up in either area?
Save the date and pray about whom you can bless by inviting them to that which promises to be a fabulous, fun weekend away. You won’t want to miss it!
Yarrow’s website can be accessed at www.yarrowgolf.com .
